SCENOGRAPHY

Every space, even if completely empty, becomes a
dramatic space
from the moment something happens in it and
a spectator looks at it.
The visuals are inextricably linked to the
dramatic action.
And the action is likewise inseparable from
the visuals.

The scenography is the sum
of the visual elements of the dramatic event.
The actors, along with their movements
and their costumes, are also part of this.

I usually avoid the terms
‘sets’ and ‘costumes’
which over-emphasize the decorative aspect –
something that, at least in my view,
has nothing to do with making designs for theater.
For me, there is no question of
‘dressing up’ a dramatic space.
In many cases, I prefer to dress it down.
