Erik conjured up an image of layers that peel off one by one, like an onion, and expose the inner self. It inspired me to design a gigantic barrel, upon and within which the actors could perform, and that would allow them to appear and disappear. At first, the actors were a bit wary of the colossal object that took up much of the playing area and saw it as a constraint on their performance. But gradually the barrel became an important co-player for them and they could not have done without it.
