Macbett, Lonesco
Toneelgroep De Appel, 1974. Direction: Erik Vos. Design: Niels Hamel
At first, I wasn’t too keen on doing this play, as I thought it was a bit dated. Then suddenly I saw how we could do it. A few days later I showed Erik the first sketches: nightmarish cartoons inspired by the games my brothers and I used to play when our parents were not at home and we put on my father’s far-too-big jackets and ties. These cartoonish designs contained all the aspects of absurdism and surrealism. Erik had to get used to it but started rehearsing anyway. The stage design centers around an iron bedstead on which machine guns are mounted on either side. Macbett stands in it like a frightened child in an attic full of scary images. The huge plastic ties sometimes double as swords.
