The Tragicomedy of Don Cristobal and Dona Rosita, Garcia Lorca

A capella jazz group Tamam, 1986. Direction and design: Niels Hamel

Peggy Larson, Tamam’s musical director, and I had known each other for some time and we thought about working together one day. Thus was born the plan to make the vocal group part of the visual spectacle I had envisioned when I first read Lorca’s puppet play. It was not easy for the 12 singers. Most of them had no experience in acting, or singing while wearing masks and fat bellies. I had based the whole concept on a number of little ‘houses’ mounted on bicycle wheels that could be moved around by the players. In ever-changing arrangements, these formed the setting for the various scenes. Together with overhead projections and colorful costumes, and in combination with the music of composer Patricio Wang, the result was an event that lived on in the audiovisual memory of many people for a long time.
